Kano state Government begins polio vaccination

Abba Yusuf, the leader of Kano State, has restated his administration's unwavering commitment to eradicating the polio virus within the state. This announcement was made during the official commencement of the polio vaccination campaign in Gabasawa Local Government Area.

The governor expressed deep concern regarding the resurgence of polio in 26 states, Kano being one of them, and emphasized the selection of Gabasawa for the campaign due to its significant number of unvaccinated children.

Various international donors, including WHO, UNICEF, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and others, have provided substantial support and resources to aid in the fight against polio. Mr. Yusuf also made a promise to enhance the facilities of state-owned health institutions with modern equipment and technology.

Abubakar Labaran, the state commissioner for health, urged parents to actively cooperate in ensuring their children receive proper vaccination. Moreover, the Kano primary healthcare development agency would be responsible for the distribution of vaccination syringes across the 44 council areas. Additionally, Mr. Labaran appealed to the national primary healthcare development agency for an increased supply of vaccines, not just for under-5 children but also to cover over 20 million people, including pregnant women.

In a show of appreciation, the Emir of Gaya, Aliyu Abdulkadir, represented by the district head of Gabasawa, Sani Dawaki, thanked the state government for initiating the vaccination campaign in their area. However, he also urged for more manpower to be allocated to the general hospital in the region to enhance the quality of healthcare services.
